About us
Our Downtown Asheville location was where it all started in 2014! (Although it was the second to open). Our original vision was to bring Mediterranean comfort foods at a reasonable price to the downtown market. Over the years we realized that our average guest for this location was a bit more discerning and was truly looking for a more elevated experience. After many attempts to find our niche, we finally acquired the talents of Executive Chef Tom LaFauci in 2019. The rest, as they say, is history. Chef Tom's Italian American heritage and Jersey upbringing shine through in his form-scratch interpretations of casual yet creative comfort foods including house-made pastas, made-to-order pizzas, and much more.
Open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner with a seasonally curated full bar, 24 beers on tap, varied wine and nonalcoholic options, we truly have anything you mayor be craving. Whether you're enjoying the simplistic industrial chic dining room, our vibrant pet friendly patio or our endlessly customizable upstairs private event space, The Loft at Twisted Laurel, our compassionate, authentic service staff is sure to make you feel welcome in our "home".
The Lore of the Laurel
Our logo - Did you notice the lady in our tree? Her name is Daphne, from Greek mythology. As the story goes, Apollo had become arrogant from recent victory over a dragon. In his arrogance, he told Eros (known as Cupid today) that he should leave war-like weapons to mighty gods such as himself and stick to his own pastimes. This infuriated Eros and he abruptly climbed atop a tall rock and released two arrows: one sharp and gold-tipped and another blunt and lead-tipped. The sharp, gold-tipped arrow pierced the heart of Apollo inflaming his love for Daphne, the beautiful daughter of the river god Peneus, while the blunt, lead-tipped arrow struck Daphne creating an intense aversion for love in her heart. In an effort to escape Apollo's advances, Daphne asked her father for help. Peneus transformed Daphne into a laurel tree forever protecting her from Apollo. Thus, the lady in our tree!
Our building - Originally built as the Okay Tire shop, we uncovered a wonderful patina on the "I" beams that used to be the anchor point for industrial lifts. We liked it so much that we preserved it and even mimicked it on a portion of the ceiling where we moved the original spiral staircase. It has been many different things over the years, including Max's Celebrity Deli, Burgerland (you can still see the glue from the logo letters high atop the Spruce street side of the building), Jolly Rouge (a pirate themed bar) and just before Twisted Laurel it was the Barcade, a dark, graffitied dive bar that specialized in vintage video game consoles, oversized sofas and cheap liquor.
Our artists - All of the metal work in and around our building was handcrafted by the late Todd Miller from Screaming Hot Iron. From the intricate sign on the front of our building overlooking the patio (the letters of the sign were cut out and installed over the door on the Spruce Street entrance) to the custom bar stools and even the restroom sign were painstakingly crafted by Todd himself.
The paintings on our walls were all made by Asya Zahia Colie. She is a French painter who grew up south of France and currently splits time living there and Asheville. Creativity has been a part of her life since childhood. She has always been drawn to sketching. It was not until her early forties, that she picked up a paintbrush to create art. Before becoming an artist, Asya worked in the hair and fashion industry.
